Offshores, crypto, trusts and Halushchenko in pre-trial detention: how the financial scheme worked

The case in briefRESISTANCE MEDIA

The court's decision and the risk of a "golden cage". The High Anti-Corruption Court ordered pre-trial detention for Halushchenko, a figure in "Mindichgate", with the alternative of UAH 200 million bail. He is charged with serious crimes punishable by 7 to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property. Halushchenko said he would challenge the amount of bail, saying he wants it to be UAH 30 million. This shows insolence and cynicism, because in practice bail in cases against top officials is just a delayed release.

Offshores, crypto, trusts and Halushchenko in pre-trial detention: how the financial scheme worked
Investigations, 18.02.2026

How the offshore structure worked
The scheme was built professionally and in several layers. The key jurisdiction is England, known as an offshore territory: an "investment fund" is set up on paper, dirty money is legalised as investment, and the real owners are hidden. A transfer of funds from an "investment fund" is a legal financial instrument. Next, the cash was converted into cryptocurrency, which was supposedly used to buy shares in the fund.

To hide the beneficiaries, another layer was added - a company in the Marshall Islands. The final shield was Nevis with its trusts, known for complicated procedures for accessing information and for not recognising foreign court rulings. Servicing such a structure could cost up to $100,000, which shows how serious it was and that it was controlled by a wide circle of high-ranking people.

Karma in action: from the Mahomedrasulov case to Halushchenko's arrest
Halushchenko himself previously insisted on keeping NABU detective Ruslan Mahomedrasulov, who handed over the "Mindich tapes", in strict pre-trial detention; for more than six months the detective and his father were held in solitary confinement. Court decisions were repeatedly delayed, and hearings were postponed precisely when the Midas case went public. Now the man who demanded isolation for others has ended up in pre-trial detention himself.

Why bail must be abolished
The bail system in top corruption cases has turned into a financial filter: if you have money, release is only a matter of time. Bail is usually paid instantly.

Enough! Bail for corrupt officials must be abolished. As long as the option of walking free on bail remains, the risk of flight, pressure on witnesses or destruction of evidence does not go away.
