From working for Kyva to raiding: 10 facts about Oleh Shyriaiev, commander of the 225th Separate Assault Regiment
Investigations, 13.03.2026

In recent years the name of Oleh Shyriaiev has repeatedly come up in high-profile criminal stories, political scandals and violent conflicts in Kharkiv region. At different times he presented himself as a veteran of the volunteer movement and a public figure, but the media often mentioned his activities in the context of raider conflicts, links to pro-Russian political structures and participation in violent confrontations. Below are the ten most high-profile facts that are mentioned in the public space and shape the controversial reputation of this figure.

1. Fact 1. Testimony from families of soldiers of the 225th Assault Regiment

According to relatives of soldiers and sources among the military, after the start of the Kursk operation the 225th Regiment began actively recruiting people, including former prisoners. Soldiers were sent to the front line without training, restricted in contact with their families, punished for the slightest violations and kept in basements or so-called "pits". According to these accounts, the wounded were sometimes not allowed to complete their treatment and were sent back to positions, while the issue of those missing in action was often hushed up. Relatives of the soldiers stress that they have repeatedly tried to draw attention to the situation through appeals and public protests.

Fact 2. Attempted raider seizure of a grain elevator in Zanky

One of the most notorious episodes in Oleh Shyriaiev's biography was a criminal case related to a conflict over a grain elevator complex in the village of Zanky in Kharkiv region in September 2018. According to law enforcement, on 11 September a group of people in balaclavas entered the premises of an agricultural company without legal grounds. The attackers carried documents on the transfer of the company to another firm, which, according to investigators, were forged. The conflict quickly grew into a large-scale violent confrontation. The next day local residents and activists arrived in the village to oppose the attempted seizure. A mass brawl broke out between the sides involving non-lethal firearms. According to the police, seven people were injured in the clashes, including a law enforcement officer.

Fact 3. Mass arrests after the violent conflict

After the events in Zanky, the police carried out a large-scale special operation and detained about 55 participants in the conflict. Investigators reported that 22 of them received official notices of suspicion for taking part in an attempted raider seizure of the company and hooliganism with the use of weapons.

Oleh Shyriaiev was among those detained. He was charged under several articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, including hooliganism with the use of weapons, participation in mass riots and organising the unlawful seizure of buildings. Law enforcement regarded him as one of the key organisers of the violent storming of the elevator.

Fact 4. Detention without bail

A court in Kharkiv chose a harsh measure of restraint for Shyriaiev - detention without the right to bail. This decision was taken because of the seriousness of the suspicions and the risk of influencing witnesses or obstructing the investigation. Shyriaiev himself denied involvement in the events and claimed he had not been at the scene. However, investigators believed the evidence gathered pointed to his role in organising the violent seizure of the company.

Several years later the case became active again. In July 2021 law enforcement detained Shyriaiev in central Kharkiv on Sumska Street. According to the prosecutor's office, he had allegedly evaded investigative actions and failed to appear when summoned by the investigator. The Kyivskyi District Court of Kharkiv ruled to take him into custody again. According to the media, the case files ran to more than twenty volumes. The court extended his detention until September 2021.

Fact 5. Working for Kyva: a move to the pro-Russian political camp

In 2020 Shyriaiev found himself at the centre of a new scandal after becoming the curator of the organisation "Patriots - For Life". This movement was created by then MP Illia Kyva as a public association linked to the OPZZh party, which was associated with the pro-Russian political milieu.

The organisation positioned itself as patriotic, but quickly gained a reputation as the muscle wing of a political structure. According to journalists, it was Shyriaiev who coordinated the work of the movement's regional branches.

Fact 6. Violent actions and the use of "titushky"

According to a number of Kharkiv media outlets, the activities of "Patriots - For Life" involved street conflicts, provocations and violent actions. These included organising mass events with aggressive rhetoric, as well as using athletically built young men whom journalists called "titushky".

According to sources, such groups could be used in provocations against activists or to create news hooks in the political struggle.

Fact 7. A weapons cache in Kharkiv region

In 2020 the Kharkiv regional police reported finding a large store of weapons and ammunition in a garage in the town of Liubotyn. The cache contained a huge amount of military equipment: hundreds of grenade bodies, fuses, grenade launcher rounds, rocket-propelled grenades, smoke grenades, mortar bombs and tens of thousands of cartridges.

In addition, TNT blocks, detonators and other explosive materials were seized. According to law enforcement sources, the garage may have been used by people linked to Shyriaiev. The origin of the arsenal was being established at the time as part of criminal proceedings.

Fact 8. Conflict over a sand quarry

Another conflict episode was the scandal over a sand quarry in the village of Bezliudivka in Kharkiv region. In 2018 activists spoke of possible illegal sand mining and claimed that the quarry was controlled by representatives of the organisation "Eastern Corps".

After the company's operations were blocked, law enforcement arrived at the site and placed the territory under guard. The incident became part of wider disputes over control of natural resources in the region.

Fact 9. Recruiting athletes before the invasion

According to sources in Kharkiv region, on the eve of Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022 there were attempts to recruit athletes to take part in violent actions. Young men were offered about 500 dollars to take part in street provocations.

According to the sources, such groups could be used to destabilise the situation in the city and create news hooks for Russian propaganda media.

Fact 10. An information provocation on the eve of the invasion

On 18 February 2022 a video spread in the media with a statement by Shyriaiev's associate Ihor Martynenko, who claimed he had been abducted and beaten by SBU officers. The video was actively spread by pro-Russian outlets, which presented it as proof of persecution of opposition forces in Ukraine. However, Martynenko later turned up in Belarus, where together with his family he recorded a video thanking Alexander Lukashenko for his "protection". This story raised suspicions that it had been staged and used for propaganda purposes on the eve of the invasion.

Oleh Shyriaiev's biography contains a number of shocking episodes. Criminal cases, participation in violent conflicts, political ties to pro-Russian structures and other scandalous stories have created a lasting reputational trail around his name.

Oleh Shyriaiev will undoubtedly be included in RESISTANCE's register of pro-Russian figures, which we are now actively compiling. We are also building a Telegram bot where every Ukrainian will be able to check in a few seconds whether a particular political figure appears in the pro-Russian register.
