74-year-old Bayrou was prime minister for only nine months. During that time, he managed to lose the support of parliament at record speed. While France's opposition parties fully backed his candidacy in December 2024, on 8 September both the left and the right voted for the cabinet's resignation.

The Élysée Palace said Emmanuel Macron would name a candidate for prime minister in the coming days. However, sceptics believe the chances of parliament backing him are very low.
