Controversial law No. 14048 destroys the independence of local self-government

The case in briefRESISTANCE MEDIA

The Verkhovna Rada has passed a law that allows the government to create a new body able to file state lawsuits against local councils. Any community, city or region can now be squeezed through the courts if its decision displeases Kyiv.

Cases will be heard within 15 days - faster than corruption cases, which lie untouched for years.

The Rada's legal department warned that the provision can be interpreted any way one likes, which legalises pressure from the centre on the regions. What is the rush? The law was passed at lightning speed - 1.5 months after registration. It takes effect upon publication and will start working one year after martial law is lifted.

Classic authoritarianism, reminiscent of the Party of Regions era: when the centre lacks control, it builds a vertical of pressure. Ukraine is repeating the Russian model of centralism instead of the decentralisation people have fought for since 2014.

People voted for Servant of the People and Zelensky hoping for justice, and got Yanukovych 2.0 - with better PR and the same desire to usurp power.
