What does this mean in simple words?
Remember the Mindich tapes? The NABU video in the Tymoshenko case? Recordings of conversations, messages, documents and footage of searches in cases against top officials? If the law is passed, next time you may simply not see any of it.
The bill effectively proposes to ban law enforcement from talking about cases against top politicians without separate court permission. It will not be possible to report even the serving of a notice of suspicion, the start of an investigation or searches. And if a court does allow publication, that decision can be dragged through appeals and cassations for years. While the courts go on, the information will stay under lock and key.
Moreover, investigators could face up to 5 years in prison for such publications. In other words, the proposal is to punish not the person exposed for corruption, but the one who told society about it.
And the most interesting part: this bill appears after NABU and SAPO published recordings and case materials concerning Yuliia Tymoshenko, and the whole country heard about voting for bribes.
It looks like a desire to bring back the times when cases against politicians were decided behind closed doors, and citizens learned about them last - if at all.
Because what corruption fears most is not NABU. What corruption fears most is publicity.
