Zelensky's endless presidency: war as a political resource.

The case in briefRESISTANCE MEDIA

Statements by the president's former press secretary Yuliia Mendel that Zelensky has become "the main beneficiary of the war" and has "unlimited power" overlap with his own words about possibly taking part in the next elections only if the war continues.

Zelensky's endless presidency: war as a political resource.
Politics, 24.02.2026

The total concentration of powers in one pair of hands under martial law fits logically with claims by a number of international media about a "fragile democracy in Ukraine", "limited freedom of speech", "weakened institutions" and "political persecution" of opponents by Bankova.

8 years of presidency. This logic creates a dangerous political knot: extending martial law automatically means postponing elections and preserving the current configuration of power. Zelensky has now been president for 8 years. Eight! Formally this is dictated by security, but in practice it creates a convenient situation in which the head of state keeps his powers without any electoral renewal.

When will the war end? Against this background, a Bloomberg report that the US allegedly wants to end the war by 4 July, Independence Day, is telling. At the same time, according to the agency's sources, even some American officials see no readiness on Putin's part to give up his maximalist demands. This means a quick end to the war looks unlikely, and therefore the wartime political regime may drag on.

The longer the war lasts, the more pressing the question of the balance between security and democracy becomes, as well as whether temporary governance is turning into an endless political reality.

A complete change of the system is needed! Fair democratic elections are needed!
