On 9 July 2018 alone, Oleksandr Sukhachov bought 30 apartments. Each cost between UAH 24.6 and 48.9 thousand - about 1-2 thousand dollars at the exchange rate of the time. Just two days later he bought another 28 apartments at similar prices. A square metre in these buildings cost about 800 dollars at the time. In other words, the apartments were sold dozens of times cheaper than the market.
According to the journalists, he received all these properties from entities linked to Kharkiv developer Yehor Maslennikov, owner of the Stroi Siti group of companies.
In 2023 the State Bureau of Investigation opened criminal proceedings concerning the developer Yehor Maslennikov's companies. That is, the body headed by Oleksii Sukhachov began investigating the activities of a businessman from whose entities his brother had earlier received dozens of properties.
This possible conflict of interest is the main subject of the investigation.
The attempt to block publication of the story caused a separate outcry. After the journalists' requests, Parkovyi-2 LLC went to court, and judge Serhii Vovk of the Pechersk District Court of Kyiv banned Slidstvo.Info and the AntAC from spreading information about this property.
In response, several Ukrainian media outlets published the investigation simultaneously as part of the "143 Initiative" so that the information could not be hidden.
Ukraine cannot build the rule of law on the principle of "one set of rules for insiders, another for everyone else". If the facts presented by the journalists are confirmed, answers will be needed not only to questions about 143 properties, but also to questions about trust in the SBI as an institution.
