The free meals programme for pupils of grades one to eleven is a large-scale reform initiated by First Lady Olena Zelenska, which officials of Cherkasy region have actively supported.
It would seem that everything is fine. The state has allocated large subventions, the region reports on its successes, and the Smila city council happily collects likes. But if you open the comments under the mayor's posts, it becomes clear: the parents of Smila schoolchildren are definitely not thinking about cutlets and salads right now, they care more about their children's education.

Because of air raid alerts, pupils do not have access to a full educational process, and as a result the quality of education is rapidly declining. The reason is simple - many of the city's educational institutions still have no proper shelters that are safely equipped for studying. These significant budget funds, which the city and the region spend on co-financing, could have been redirected to building reliable shelters in schools and kindergartens. After all, in today's realities a child's safety and life are always more important than a full stomach.
But the local authorities have their own maths: to post another portion for PR - there is always time and inspiration. But to provide children with basic protection and decent conditions for gaining knowledge - there is never money, or it is not provided for.
